The Premium Domain Name Paradigm

September 25th, 2010

Premium DomainsAll companies want to successfully sell their products & services in the marketplace. Consequently, they brainstorm, strategize and eventually implement all kinds of approaches for promoting themselves to local, regional, and global consumers.

One question which seems destined to be asked from within a company’s ranks is “How can we use the internet to grow our company?”

This is a broad question with many answers. It is true and correct that many companies will fall behind by not establishing a maximum impact internet presence. There are numerous stories, both told and many untold, in which a company lost market share while their competitor leapt ahead by taking full advantage of the internet realm.

Part of the magic (and ironically still a mystery to many companies) is the marketing boost which can be provided by high-quality generic domain names. Yes, these brand/identity enhancers typically come at a premium price, but then so does premium office space, high level executive management, and professional marketing such as that provided by any Madison Avenue advertising firm.

Sooner or later, companies begin to notice that internet presence brings its own cachet, and results. This paradigm shift in thinking typically requires the vision of a company’s director of marketing, or perhaps the CEO. Creating this strong internet presence can, and should, be built around a quality generic domain name which represents the company’s location or product focus.

What is certain is that premium generic domains rule the roost. This is not likely to change.

MyrtleBeach.comSkip Hoagland is a well known geo domain developer and owner of such beauties as Atlanta.com and Portland.com. Today, Ron Jackson reported in DNJournal that Skip sold MyrtleBeach.com for $6.5 million to Intellistrand.

Not only did the deal deliver a $6.5 million payout to Skip, but he also acquired the remaining 50% interest in a number of other super premium domain properties in which he had been a 50% partner. These included Baltimore.com, Daytona.com, SouthCarolina.com, and Honolulu.com.

premium4This is a huge domain industry news event and a very exciting illustration of geo domain relevance and power. Myrtle Beach is an extremely popular vacation destination and attracts a tremendous number of beach lovers year after year.

Huge Corporation Acquires .INFO Domain

September 10th, 2010

Oracle.infoOracle Corporation is the 18th largest company in America with a $122 billion market cap and 105,000 employees. Oracle specialize in database software. Their products fuel many of the world’s most successful enterprises.

Ron Jackson of DNJournal publishes a weekly domain name sales report, and I noticed that the last entry on his report was the sale of Oracle.info. Naturally, I wondered if perhaps Oracle Corp. had acquired the domain name. They did indeed purchase Oracle.info for a mere $1377. Quite a nice pick-up for the company who had also previously acquired “Oracle” in the .BIZ web address and also in the official .mobi (mobile) extension. In fact, the company have a fully developed .mobi complaint site in operation. Their .biz and .info versions are currently forwarding to the Oracle.com primary website.

As .INFO is one of the world’s leading web addresses based on sheer registration numbers (nearly 7 million), it is certainly logical that Oracle Corporation would obtain Oracle.info at such an affordable price. This rounds out their company domain portfolio quite well.

Oracle.infoIt should be noted that Oracle is a generic word typically meaning “a person or thing which acts as an agent of divine communication”. Consequently, Oracle Corporation would have no automatic trademark right to the word “oracle”. It’s good to see a company of their size using a legitimate avenue (aftermarket purchase) to acquire Oracle.info as opposed to misusing the UDRP in a reverse domain name hijacking attempt.

JoeMiller.US – Domain Name Ideal For Senate Candidate

September 3rd, 2010

JoeMiller.USJoe Miller is a candidate for an Alaskan senate seat and he is using a .US domain name (www.JoeMiller.US) for his official campaign website. The website has been active for 2-3 months and is on an upward trajectory as is Joe’s public exposure and popularity.

The JoeMiller.US logo makes good use of the traditional red, white, and blue colors common to the American flag. The .US logo is prominently displayed in almost all of Joe’s campaign materials (signs, t-shirts, automobiles, website) and implies the appropriate “American” association for which .US was intended.

JoeMiller.USI have seen Joe interviewed on both CNBC and CNN in the past two days. The CNN piece in particular displayed the .US logo prominently. This type of exposure is excellent for raising the .US profile in America.

As a side note, some state governments use the .gov web address while many utilize .US. A few examples of state senate sites include:
