Playboy Launches .TV Domain Name

December 9th, 2010

The ubiquitous publication of many decades has launched its sexy array of beauties via Playboy.TV. Playboy’s evolution through time found them typically on the cutting edge of technology. They moved from a very successful hardcopy magazine (founded in 1953) to having success in both the satellite and videotape markets before finally moving to the internet.

It appears that Playboy are now positioning themselves for the next big step in internet advancement. That would be the condensing of media & communications signals into a single digital portal coming into the home or business. This will be a huge game changer and will become the equivalent of a nuclear war between countries. Except the war will be waged between large media conglomerates each vying to become your TV-phone-internet provider of choice.

There was a time when a family would subscribe to a hardline phone service (like AT&T), have dial-up internet, and maybe a separate cable company running a line into the house for cable television. Anyone with a home-based business might also have a separate phone service on top of all that. Times have changed though. For example, I know obtain all these services through one company, Time Warner. Multiple digital signals, multiple products, packaged as one service, and with only one bill. This is the future.

Playboy acquiring Playboy.TV is possibly one of the best moves they have made in recent times. .TV is the single best media web address on the internet for obvious reasons. To fully appreciate this move one must understand that web addresses will be the “channels” on that all encompassing single digital portal coming into your home.

In other words, Playboy.TV may well become the worldwide channel for their brand, and subscribers will pay for the channel à la carte. Imagine ordering your complete TV lineup direct from TV networks and programmers thus bypassing the traditional cable companies completely. The big winner here is the single portal digital access provider who will be bringing internet into your home and to all of your mobile internet devices. That is the holy grail of future media. And .TV may likely be at the very center of it all.

BMW.TV For Media Centric Domain Name

November 20th, 2010

BMWBMW, the famous German auto manufacturer, have recently launched a new website showcasing their line of autos and motorcycles on BMW.TV.

dotTV has been around for about ten years and was for many of those years the most pricey of all available domain name extensions. However, the pricing structure for .TV has been changed in recent years such that more companies, investors, and developers began to migrate to the .TV web address for mass marketing to internet consumers.

BMW is known for luxury vehicles as well as being ahead of the curve with their internet utilization. They were one of the first auto manufacturers to establish an online presence using the .US (United States) web space, and have a fully functioning web portal in operation now at BMW.US.

CNBC and Shell Energy Partner Using .TV Domain

October 17th, 2010

EnergyOpportunities.TVA joint venture between financial news channel CNBC and Shell Energy has produced the media/video website EnergyOpportunities.TV.

dotTV is a domain name product of VeriSign and is a perfect fit for online TV channels and sites that focus on delivering video. Most of the world are familiar with “TV” being synonymous with television. Think TV Guide.

The EnergyOpportunities.TV website documents discussions & debates hosted around the globe pertaining to governmental and private industry efforts to develop new energy alternatives. This is a hot socio-political topic with serious long-term consequences for society, governments, and countries.

There is a related technology struggle beginning to emerge in which more TV content providers are streaming their programming via the internet in addition to traditional cable TV channels. And in some instances, they are opting to offer subscriptions through internet only bypassing the cable company network entirely.

A friend of mine likes to watch all of his alma mater’s football games – available only through an internet subscription. He receives this broadcast via high speed internet to his laptop, and then runs that out to a high definition TV.

This set-up emphasizes how a .TV web address can be especially useful in the years to come as technology makes a complete migration to the all encompassing single internet portal.

Dot TV Domain Sales at Sedo

April 23rd, 2010
Comments Off

teamplanA .TV auction concluded recently at online brokerage house, Sedo. Several notable sales of .tv web addresses included:

  • Christmas.tv for $32,000
  • Business.tv for $100,999
  • Shows.tv for $20,500
  • Learn.tv for $41,000
  • Vacation.tv $14,000
  • Fantasy.tv for $10,600

The .TV domain extension has been limited in its adoption for many years due to its registry not being clear enough with registrants on the exact plan for future renewal fees. The up front cost for acquiring premium .TV domains was relatively high and the renewal fees sometimes in the thousands of dollars per year.

This was largely rectified by Verisign with these newly purchased premium domains now being subject to only a nominal annual registration fee ($20 – $30 per year).

My favorite from the Sedo auction was Business.TV although all of the above keyword domain names qualify as premium choices in any top level domain extension. Business.com became one of the most impressive and interesting sales in domaining history, and inspired legions of domain investors to stake their claim in the new domain name frontier.

Robert DeMartinis (from Philadelphia) acquired the ultra premium domain name, Business.US, some years ago. This is a multi-million dollar internet domain name by any definition, and will one day make a tremendous asset acquisition for a U.S. based corporation. Business.US

Similarly, Business.TV has great potential for branding as a business-centric media portal. Currently, the domain’s whois is not yet reflecting the new registrant owner so it’s not possible to determine if the buyer is a private individual, a group of investors, or a single corporate level end-user.

The Sedo .TV auction was successful, and attracted a considerable number of buyers offering them a new opportunity to enter the field of domain name investing and development.

FLO.TV - Personal TelevisionJust viewed during the first half of the Superbowl a commercial for a new service called FLO TV Live Mobile Personal Television. The official website displayed to millions of Superbowl fans was FLO.TV.

FLO.TV is an excellent domain name being both short and memorable. Since the service being offered is live mobile television, the selection of the .TV web address is just perfect. The company catch phrase is appropriately titled …

Now TV Goes Where You Go.

FloTV is a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated. The FloTV personal handheld television can be purchased at Amazon.com, Best Buy, and Radio Shack among several other known retailers.

There is a pretty extensive channel line up including those dedicated to live sports and lots of breaking news channels. The corporate website for FloTV identifies both Verizon Wireless and AT&T as main partners having the ability to deliver FloTV to over 200 million subscribers.

RT.TV – Russia Today Make The Purchase

February 10th, 2009

rtJohn van den Berg is a respected and well-liked domainer who just sold RT.TV to Russia Today for $62,500. Russia Today is a 24/7 English-language news channel. They broadcast over six continents and 100 countries, and are headquartered out of Moscow with bureaus in many other cities worldwide. John’s sale evolved over a 5 month period with back and forth negotiations occurring with the government of Russia (since Russia Today is state-owned).

But things are really just beginning to heat up for John. He also sold Me.TV recently for an undisclosed amount due to the often employed non-disclosure agreement (NDA). And, he owns DE.TV which is in auction at Sedo right this moment. The reserve has been met and there remain 5 days left before the auction is finalized. Current price for DE.TV is at $10,892.

No, we’re not finished! This is the tip of the iceberg for John van den Berg. You may be wondering if he has any other premium domains. How about …

  • Fly.TV
  • Mexico.TV
  • Italy.TV
  • Dogs.TV, … and many more.

John was born in Holland and he currently lives in Kenya and Dubai. He began domaining in late 2004, and owns approximately 2200 domain names of which 150 are .TV web addresses. diesel.TV is the ccTLD for the island of Tuvalu, but is better recognized for the word “Television” having been smartly rebranded years ago by the .TV Corporation.

My guess is we will be hearing about more top sales from John. Fly.com was just sold for $1,760,000 in a recently publicized deal. By association, one can presume that there is significant dollar value attached to John’s Fly.TV which sounds like the ultimate online, media-rich travel portal.

However, my favorite is probably Dogs.TV … WOW! Fantastic domain name and a perfect fit for the .TV web address. “People love dogs” is a gross understatement. Dogs.TV could become the world’s # 1 website for all things canine. Can’t you imagine global dog enthusiasts uploading their favorite funny videos of all their pooches? The entertainment value would be never-ending, and lucrative. John has a nice start already toward this end.

.TVCongratulations to John van den Berg! He loves the .TV extension. And he made a prudent domain name investment that is paying off. THE BEST … is yet to come.
